It was cool seeing more of Bernie Hughes, Jimmy Mac, Ned Egan, and especially the constantly entertaining Altar Boys: Sean and Kevin. Eventually Ryan is contacted to reign in his crew, invests in the film himself, and meets its star Diane Carson, just out of rehab. City of Dreams is the second book in the Danny Ryan trilogy, following the wild ride of tense highs and heartbreaking lows of a modern day gangster who has just enough cunning to keep himself and his crew a step ahead of his murderous enemies. First, they break him down dollar by dollar, but then they meet the director, who wants authentic acting, and hires them as consultants.

A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. In 1988, Danny Ryan and the remnants of his crew head cross-country, having barely survived a bloody East Coast crime war. He takes along several of his lieutenants who he constantly admonishes to keep a low profile and find honest work. Danny and his crew head out on the highway with Danny’s little boy as he is now widowed thanks to cancer and his elderly father who is fighting a losing battle with Alzheimer’s.Danny needs to reinvent himself, at heart he is a grafter, and he sees an opportunity to do just that by investing in and becoming involved in Providence, but all of this is about to be put in jeopardy.

While we’re treated to a few short bouts of the violence you’d expect after reading the first book in the trilogy, the majority of the book deals with the Irish fugitives' ideas of laying low. The second book in what I consider as the Danny Ryan series was a solid addition to the trilogy leaving me extremely interested and excited to get to the last book next year. Danny is our Odysseus, and this leg of the journey takes him from New Hampshire to Southern California. But, after the shooting stops and the loot is packed away in the getaway car, Danny hesitates to execute Abbarca’s men who are zip-tied on the floor. The other aspect of Winslow’s work that stands out is how his books function as a detailed alternative crime history of America from the 1990s onwards. With stops in Las Vegas, San Diego and Hollywood, Danny tries to go straight, for the sake of his son.

It’s a deal that is difficult to pass up, particularly when the fed contact suggests that the lives of all of his Irish friends and family would be in serious jeopardy should he refuse. The story is well crafted but for a deus ex machina ending, and even that is enough of a shocker that readers may not mind. For a time, I thought I was reading a merged script of The Godfather and The Departed (remember that scene where Leonardo DiCaprio gives a beatdown to 2 hoods from Providence, only minutes before Jack Nicholson murders them on a beach). City of Dreams (2023) is the middle game of the Danny Ryan trilogy, which began with City on Fire (2021) and will end next year with next year’s City in Ruins (April 2024). Winslow still reigns as one of my favorite authors whose books I look forward to enjoying long before they hit the stalls.Widowed and looking for a safer life for he and his young son Ian, Danny plans to go straight and eventually ends up in Hollywood, getting involved in a movie about his old life, and involved with a lead actress with plenty of demons. In Winslow’s world, Italians and Irish, like Trojans and Greeks, do not know how to let the little things go. Ryan, a recent widower, winds up fleeing Providence and landing in San Diego with his 18-month-old son and elderly father. And if you’re looking forward to what’s still ahead, we rounded up some of the buzziest releases of the summer.

And I suppose that's who is reading Winslow at this point, because once you've read one of his books you are a fan for life. I., Italian mob, sets in motion a risky plan, in bestseller Winslow’s powerful sequel to 2022’s City on Fire. Felt maybe a bit rushed at times, which is a bit strange as the author’s work always felt very carefully and well-paced previously.

The progression of Ryan’s life involves numerous twists and turns, the result of which makes for a sweeping tale of family, revenge, and survival as he confronts the reality of what he hopes his life will turn out to be. Look to the best mysteries to solve as you lounge by the pool, take a refreshing swim through some historical fiction, or slip off to the cabana with one of our five favorite escapist reads.
