I know that to some people, two sprays of perfume is just not enough, but trust me when it comes to the Chanel Coco Noir, you would not want any more. As the scent matures, the base of musk, incense, almond-like tonka bean, and rich sandalwood rises to complete the experience. This isn’t a shy one, with plenty of character and attitude, the kind of scent I imagine a woman like Miranda Priestly would wear to meetings. Instead of the gorgeously blended and slightly powdery orange, bergamot and lemon, Coco Noir starts with a very bright and powdery grapefruit.

This is the olfactory equivalent of easily digestible, commercialized synthetic soundbytes, mixed into a 30-second ringtone. To be honest, there is space in the Coco continuum for a theoretical perfume between this one and the spicier Coco, which might have lived up to the 'noir' label and bottle better but, you know what? It's fresh and kind of fizzy almost upon first application, but then it becomes soft and the vanilla really comes out. The slightly spicy geranium is lovely, too, especially as it combines with the sandalwood and leather notes in the drydown. Years ago I was lucky enough to be handed down a bottle from a great aunt, but I was too young to really appreciate this and unfortunately blew through it in a few short months. It is my signature scent and I don't think its going to change anytime soon, sometimes I layer it with Kayali Vanilla 28 to make it a little sweeter. I use to wear this perfume during the night and it would last for days on my clothes and on my skin until i showered. It’s luscious on my skin, the opening very fresh and citrusy and then settling into a warm woody scent that blankets me. I can’t accurately describe this scent bc it’s SO well blended and the brilliance and beauty far exceeds my verbal abilities! I paired this with tweed skirts and long trench coats and my round tort glasses and felt very sophisticated and dark.It was the first one I bought because I was becoming intrigued by this oriental-adjacent, aldehydic character that seemed to serve as an accessible point of entry leading towards what I thought of as vintage fragrances. Dior may have a longer history of pissing off loyal fragrance devotees with its reformulations, renaming and flanker-proliferation antics, but with Coco Noir, it looks like Chanel caught the same corporatist cancer that Dior did.

I loved the romantic rose and sunny narcissus in the heart of Coco Noir and I thought that the blend of citruses in the top notes was tastefully done, but I couldn't smell the jasmine or peach in the heart notes, which would have made this fragrance much better to me personally. It's a good rendition of the classics I'll admit - it has the Chanel DNA in there somewhere, like a half-sister. In Coco Noir a citrus opening was added, the cloves were moved to the background and the rose takes center stage. If you’re into Middle Eastern fragrances then the deeper notes of the Coco mademoiselle intense is going to be a good mixer to create an original signature scent with a arab scent layered underneath it to give it depth. Then as it dries down it smells clean, slightly powdery and a lit bit citrusy with light florals and some pretty patchouli. The contemporary expression of a magnetic sensuality told in a modern oriental fragrance with luminous notes. Before this, I didn’t understand how CM could be a flanker to the original; they seemed so different. The first spray is fresh but also warm spicy, it's striking and all throughout the life it's different.
