As the book begins, Iris is struggling with her job, spending her days pretending she is on top of nebulous projects with ludicrous names such as Project Salmon Egg. One of the most powerful elements of the story i enjoyed was the author's constant reference to the same points of Iris' life on Nyx. Then you hear about Life on Nyx, a programme that allows 100 lucky winners the chance to escape it all, move to another planet and establish a new way of life.

Rather than grand, epic, sweeping futurism, we have here an intimate tale of one woman’s yearning for both an escape from the drudgery of our cyclical life (work, home, sleep, work) and a way to feel like she was part of something important, both personally and professionally.I found the fact that no one in Sylvie's family ever really communicated honestly with each other led to bad decisions, or worse, no decisions at all. It's been a bitter cocktail made with a measure of environmental disasters with a swig of political uproar, and a double-shot of Covid-19. There’s hard sci-fi, which concerns itself with real-world science and obsesses over the technicalities of the science-and-engineering details (Arthur C. Filled with sharp observations about the way in which we live now, Everything You Ever Wanted is both an acute satire of our social media-dominated times – notably, Iris still strives for “likes” when living on Nyx, even though she has no idea whether anyone on Earth is reading her sanitised social media posts – and a haunting examination of depression and anxiety rendered in diamond-sharp prose with barely a wasted word.

The scenery of Iris' Earth is completely identical to the Earth of our own, having visited London often as a child I actually found it rather nostalgic. So when the opportunity arises for her to change her state of existence completely, she jumps at it and goes to live on the planet Nyx. For disregarding the pseudo-science that bogs down and overcomplicates so much modern sci-fi with needless tedium. Sauma knows that we all want life to be more than it is; that we long for the connections it offers to be fuller and richer.Luiza Sauma’s Everything You Ever Wanted is a dystopian novel inspired in part by ‘Hostile Planet’ an episode of the podcast, Love + Radio.
