Description

Warm, truly interesting and pitched appropriately for the age group, these books are perfect for curious children.

Featuring 18 trailblazing women artists and scientists, Think Big, Little One is the irresistible board book adaptation of Vashti Harrison's second book Little Dreamers: Visionary Women Around the World. She earned her BA from the University of Virginia as a double major in Media Studies and Studio Art with concentrations in Film and Cinematography. Whether it's International Women's Day or not, it's always worth pointing out and celebrating the – often forgotten or undervalued – achievements of women, both past and present. Each translation or publication in another country requires a separate agreement from the foreign markets.Readers will meet trailblazing women like Mary Blair, an American modernist painter who had a major influence on how color was used in early animated films, actor/inventor Hedy Lamar, environmental activist Wangari Maathai, architect Zaha Hadid, filmmaker Agnes Varda, and physicist Chien-Shiung Wu. There are lots of familiar names in the book such as: Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Nina Simone, but there are some lesser known names (to me) so I'll be learning too. New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Vashti Harrison shines a bold, joyous light on black men through history. I unfortunately cannot have any books shipped to me to be signed, so definitely keep an eye out for my local events! Dieses Buch erzählt jeweils auf einer Seite von berühmten schwarzen* Frauen und was sie in ihrem Leben gemacht haben.

Though it’s a noticeably US-focused selection, there are British women featured among the 50 too, such as Diane Abbot, Tessa Sanderson and Shirley Bassey, which is nice to see. The legends in this book span centuries and continents, but what they have in common is that each one has blazed a trail for generations to come.

Vashti Harrison’s beloved illustrations of historical figures — scientists, activists, artists, and more — are the perfect gift for today’s young leaders. I love thinking that they're closing their eyes, looking inside themselves, to step into the shoes of these famous people, emulating their story.

Sometimes non-fiction is also a fantastic way to tempt a reluctant reader into sitting down with a book.Additionally, since I saw them as children dressing up as famous women, I wanted the page to feel like they're playing pretend.
