Recently, his childhood friend Ron Padgett wrote a memoir, published by Coffee House Press, about his friendship with Joe Brainard, about growing up in Oklahoma in the 1950s, and about his and Brainard's pursuit of poetry and art in New York City. Lucky enough to have Tulsa pals Ron Padgett and Ted Berrigan, the godfather of second-generation New York School poets, as his New York City welcoming committee, Brainard thrived, living the life of a bohemian artist on the Lower East Side and earning his first solo exhibit four short years after arriving in the city. It’s a power ballad, the story of a dissolved romance that haunts the speaker, who is still hurting over the cruelties of the relationship.

Excerpts from the Angel Hair editions appeared in Interview , Gay Sunshine , The World and the New York Herald .I think he said what a big fucking deal this was, for the Library of America to be publishing Joe alongside Melville and Whitman: Joe—a skinny, queer, glasses-wearing art student from Tulsa. The next morning he left a card behind with a picture of Jesus on it signed “with love, Jesus” on the back. In the Library of America collection, the paragraphs on the first page take up four lines, two lines, one line, one line, four, two, two, two, and two, respectively. Brainard’s writing is akin to the visual art he made: friendly and image-drenched and nonchalantly funny, kind of telescopic in a diaristic way that’s relentlessly present in its anaphora, and also sometimes sort of sexy. Com and adding a poem, you represent that you own the copyright to that poem and are granting PoetryNook.Although the references to some aspects of 40s/50s American life are now somewhat obscured by time and cultural specifics this is a little gem of a book, perceptive, funny and inspirational. Joe Brainard was een Amerikaans kunstenaar en auteur die in de jaren '60 aansluiting vond bij de New York School, met Frank O'Hara als middelpunt. I remember daydreams of living in the past and having the advantage (and sometimes the disadvantage) of knowing what was going to happen before it happened. One day last fall, I found a receipt from Amherst Books, dated a decade prior, stuck in my copy of The Collected Writings of Joe Brainard, along with instructions for fasting before blood work from UMass’s University Health Services.
