The Bafang BBSHD Mid Drive kit is by far the most popular and reliable Mid Drive kit on the market today It’s a 1000w rated nominal power motor. That means it can continuously put out 1000W and work flawlessly forever. We had my new dream bike built but only on a single speed, a 26 inch rim that hit the controller when we went off a jump, and a 52 volt Luna Cycle Battery duct taped inside the triangle. We knew it wasn’t ready for prime time….but it was good for a test ride!!! Both the Bafang BBS02 and BBSHD are amongst the best e-bike conversion kits available. And, they will transform any bike you install them on. But before you part with your hard-earned cash, it is important to remember these motors aren’t perfect and like any electrical item, are prone to problems from time to time. Both controllers have a maximum operating voltage of around 60v. This leaves little margin for error when using a 52v battery. 52v batteries fully charged will produce 58.8v, but I have tested some with a multi-meter and seen over 59v on occasion. A 48v battery will produce 54.4v fresh off the charger – this leaves a reasonable buffer zone.

If you start pedalling, the BBSHD gives power up to a certain threshold which is determined by the PAS level. These motors are regarded as the very best in the EBike world. Extremely quiet and robust. Water resistant and internally lubricated within sealed casings. There have been recorded distances of 25000 miles and still going!We were hitting speeds of 35mph the acceleration was super brisk when on the street….but most amazing is how quiet and smooth the bike was. Just amazing.

I tell you if I can just have this 3000 watts and keep this 3000 watts I promise not to ask for any more power ever.

Is it Dependable?

This is a 18 MOSFET controller, with 100V rated and automotive qualified FETs, running at high frequency for maximum power density and silent operation. One thing you will have to be aware of is if you do fit a smaller front chainring, the lowered gearing will make the bike prone to power wheelies, especially when hitting full throttle in a low gear on a steep hill start – I have had personal experience of this! For the last 6 years I have been in search of the ultimate electric mountain bike. I have spent thousands of dollars and wasted many hours on that crusade. Its worth noting that the Current Limit box is where you limit the amps for regulatory or other reasons (i.e. this is your maniac child’s bike and you want to limit the power output for safety).

The Adappto does an automatic configuring the first time you run it to a motor which makes it a helluva lot easier to get up and running. The Bafang BBSHD actually is the only mid-drive motor that has a specific version for fat-bikes. The BBS01 and BBS02 are only available in the 68mm version. So if you want to convert a fat-bike, the BBSHD will be your only option in the Bafang mid-drive conversion kit line-up. Which display to choose? Generally this stops at ’35’ or 3.5v. What that gives you is, effectively, a throttle that has two speeds: Completely Off and Full Blast. Not really but it will feel like it. I am not sure where the fail point is where things start breaking…. but this is something we will later determine with an “acid test.” Right now i am enjoying this bike too much to ruin it. Seems like a sacrilege.I did 20 miles on it today, admittedly quite a flat route, but I enjoyed a gentle boost when I felt a bit tired and the best bit was cycling home from the station (uphill all the way, right up through the centre of Lewes) which I usually dread, but today it felt really smooth and pretty Luna Cycles is built around extremes, and every day we try to throw something crazy into the mix and move forward. I guess that’s us in a nutshell…do something that scares us every day, learn something new every day, and move forward in some way. (hopefully at high speed) I am not showing original factory settings. Your motor may have settings your vendor considers proprietary. So I am showing screens I have altered and then calling out the bits I consider important.

Connection between battery and motor will require soldering. These motors are supplied with bullet connectors and our batteries are supplied with XT90 connectors, you will receive the corresponding XT90 connector with your battery. Changing the connector will NOT invalidate your warranty. The problem I see with the Bafang throttle is that it acts like an on/off switch. There doesn’t seem to be good power modulation. I have altered the firmware settings for the throttle with some success (specifically the start current). But the fact remains, I have no control over how customers use these throttles, and if you are going up a steep hill in full power mode, and you are in the wrong gear, you will be subjecting the motor to unnecessary load – causing rapid heat build-up. This setting determines how gentle the ramp-up is on your power on start. Starting up too fast can kill your motor’s controller so beware. I am using the lowest setting published in the article I linked above. Here again, why create a situation where you could end up blowing your controller or chewing up your chainrings? I stay on the conservative side. Stop Delay Charging: First time charging is VERY important. Always connect the charger to the battery with the charger powered up from the mains. This will stop a “Connection Spark”. The battery needs a “Balance Charge” on first charge. Please charge as above. The charger will display two red lights (charging) after a long period of time (between 1 and 8 hrs – depending on state) the LED charger lights will display red and green. This indicates an initial charge is complete. However, as this is a new battery, not all cells within the battery are balanced (same state of charge as some were higher/lower than others to start with). This is because cells can arrive at the factory in different batches and may have slightly different charges due to time in storage). This is very common and normal. Now please leave the charger connected to the batteries for a further 12 hrs. This allows the internal balancing system (BMS) to balance out all the internal cells. The charge may turn on and off over this period of time. This “Balance charge does not need to be done every time and is recommended every 20+ charges. Leaving the charger plugged in working does not damage the batteries. The charger is designed to stop charging at a preset level and turn on again when this level drops.

As mentioned before we needed to change to a 24 inch wheel to keep the suspension from hitting the controller on big dips. In this 24 inch wheel we decided to install a Rohloff which we know has no problem putting up with 3000 watts of power and also give us an amazing 526 percent of range so we will have the lowest of low grannies and the highest of high speed gears. Keeps me working, but not too hard … unless thats what I want, and then it has to let me do that, too. Mid drive motors provide powerful eBike performance while keeping the bike original enough that pedaling without the motor powered on has no effect on the ability to pedal the bike as normal
